Light fantastic

Back of the house Stephen Donald, director and founder of Stephen Donald Architects Ltd (SDA), has been contributing to Architect in the House for the last 10 years

In 2008, the scheme matched Stephen with the following client who was looking to renovate his home in Hollybush Hill, East London.

‘The client’s brief was to reorganise the ground and first-floor areas of the house, which were dark and disjointed, to make more efficient use of the building’s existing footprint.

We changed the position and layout of the main staircase and hallway, allowing the space to flow more easily from the stairs to the rest of the house, and creating a dramatic double-height central hallway. Two new windows on the first floor allow north and south light to filter down to the hallway at ground level.

SDA supports Architect in the House because it raises the profile of RIBA chartered architects and attracts people who wouldn’t ordinarily consider using an architect for their project. It also contributes a massive amount of money to Shelter. Last year we raised more than £2,500 – the biggest sum ever raised for the scheme by a single practice.’
